Corrections Review Completed

first_imgA review of employment practices within Correctional Services hasmade 133 recommendations to improve policies and practices thataffect African Canadian, Aboriginal, female and disabled staff. “I want to thank the managers and staff within CorrectionalServices for their involvement,” said Justice Minister MichaelBaker. “We all stand to gain when practical suggestions come forward tosupport productive, efficient work environments. We have anobligation to make sure all staff know what their rights andresponsibilities are when it comes to fair and equitabletreatment in the workplace.” Mr. Baker said the Department of Justice will give promptconsideration to the report’s recommendations. One recommendationcalls for the deputy minister to prepare an official response byJune 30. “We will appoint a departmental team to explore therecommendations and to work toward that deadline,” said Mr.Baker. The review was done over a six-month period and included:employee surveys that were sent to 688 staff; interviews; focusgroups; and a review of applicable legislation, regulations,policies and collective agreements. There is no additional cost to the taxpayer. The report’s author, Ms. Terry Mills, was on secondment from the Department ofEducation.
