Story Highlights Ground has been broken for the construction of a perimeter fence around the Howard Cooke Primary School, in Catherine Hall, St. James, to ensure the safety and security of students and teachers.Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, and Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, who broke ground on November 7, pledged a donation of $50,000 from the Community Development Fund (CDF) towards the project. She said the project is a significant step forward for the institution, and a strong demonstration of the commitment to ensure the security of the over 1,300 students attending the institution.“We (the Government) are cognizant of the fact that the safety of our students is just as important as their education. All of us have very high hopes for the school, its students and its graduates, and we want for you, an environment that is secure, quiet and which will also facilitate learning,” the State Minister said. She called on all stakeholders who use the facility to take care of the fence when the project is completed, while encouraging the parents of the students attending the institution to forge a strong partnership with the school.“You have a responsibility not only to forge a strong partnership with the school, but to make sure that your child is safe on the property. You must ensure that it (the perimeter fence) is not destroyed, nor torn down to gain access to and from the school,” she urged the audience.Meanwhile, Acting Principal of the school, Mrs. Mavis Moses, said that safety and security have always been among the challenges of the institution, while expressing appreciation to the Board of Governors for undertaking the project.“No child can learn to his or her true potential if that child does not feel safe and secure in that classroom.  No teacher can give of his or her best if that teacher does not feel safe and secure,” she emphasized. The project is a strong demonstration of the commitment to ensure the security of the over 1,300 students attending the institution.last_img read more
