This seven month project (April to October 2012) is sponsored by the European Union under a programme called Strengthening Fisheries Management in African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries (ACP FISH 11),. The Consulting firm is SOFRECO.Currently, the management and governance of the Fisheries Sector is without the guidance of any clear documented policy framework through which actions and decisions taken within the sector are based and influenced. As such, the route to achieving sustainable economic benefits, security of livelihoods, food security and marine resources utilisation and conservation is often unclearly and undefined. There is the need to clearly define the policy direction for fisheries conservation, management and development, poverty alleviation, food security, employment creation and security and a commitment to good governance. The Fisheries Division is directly responsible for coordination, implementation and provision of technical guidance to this project. Regional bodies (CRFM and OECS) will provide additional technical support and review the resulting draft policy document.Under the project, a Technical Team comprising Fisheries and Maritime experts, Policy makers, Fishers and other critical stakeholders have been formulated to provide technical support to the consultant and review of the policy document. As part of the consultant’s terms of reference (TOR) there are three key components for getting as much information and consultation from a broad spectrum of persons at all levels. These components are;– Technical Committee meetings– Fisheries stakeholders meetings, and– Fishers consultationsThe support of key stakeholders like the National Association of Fisherfolk Cooperatives (NAFCOOP) is crucial to the success of the end result. To accomplish this task, two Technical Committee meetings have been held and key Stakeholders have been interviewed with a view to getting their input. The support of the NAFCOOP has been very proactive and helpful. Consultations have been arranged for the following places and times with fishers.– Roseau community consultation – April 30, 5:00 pm– Portsmouth community consultation – May 2, 4:00pm, and– Marigot community consultation – May 4, 5:pm Consultant Dr. Joanna Clare Gascoigne a Fisheries Specialist in Marine Conservation Biology will be in Dominica until May 7, 2012 for the first round of discussions and meeting with stakeholders, fishers and others. The project is expected to come to a close by August 20, 2012. Press Releasecenter_img Share Sharing is caring! Sharelast_img read more
