Ocean City Remembers During 9/11 Ceremony

first_imgOcean City remembered the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 at its annual Commemoration Ceremony on Thursday in front of the Ocean City Fire Department on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue, where a permanent 9/11 memorial is illuminated.A couple hundred people gathered in front of the Ocean City Fire Department on Thursday to remember the lives lost in the deadly terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and to celebrate the community spirit that emerged in the wake of the tragedy.“Not one of us forgets where we were on that day,” Ocean City Police Chief Chad Callahan said in his keynote address.Police Chief Chad Callahan delivers the keynote address of the annual 9/11 ceremony in Ocean City, NJ.He said the U.S. military and first responders nationwide “continue to perform daily acts of heroism” in an effort to prevent similar tragedies.“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf,” Callahan said, quoting George Orwell and adding “women” to the quotation after “men.”He asked for a round of applause for the police officers and firefighters standing at attention behind him.Callahan said the conditions Americans always took for granted changed on Sept. 11, 2001, when almost 3,000 Americans died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and commercial airliners. He said we’re still trying to understand, 13 years later, what compels terrorists to perform such acts of violence on innocent people, and we’re still fighting similar groups.Julia Wilson sings the “Star-Spangled Banner.”In the end, Callahan asked everybody to remember how they felt on Sept. 11, 2001, and to remember the overwhelming sense of patriotism that would follow.“And let’s not forget,” he said.Ocean City has held an annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony since Sept. 11, 2002, when former American Legion Post 524 Commander William Cruice encouraged the city to participate in organizing one.The event includes music. Daymond John delivers Idea Week keynote

first_imgDaymond John, known as “the people’s shark” on ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank,” lived up to his nickname during his equally entertaining and inspiring talk in Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Thursday night. John employed a DJ, slide show with personal pictures and a 30-second phone-friendly window where audience members could take photos of his “best poses” to supplement the autobiographical story of his global fashion brand FUBU.John weaved in and out between his life story and his five points for success, which were conveniently organized by the acronym “SHARK.” He recounted the amusing memory of starting his first business at 6-years-old, selling customized painted pencils to girls at his elementary school.“My principal tried to make me close that business after a month,” John said. “She had no vision.”After falling in love with hip-hop music and the culture of his hometown of Brooklyn, John decided his destiny would be somehow involved with music. “I wanted to become part of hip-hop but didn’t know how,” John said. When local rappers around him began touring, he asked to go along and ended up on the same tour as budding artists about to hit it big, such as Flavor Fav. On tour, John noticed the fans and artists were all dressed similarly — an observation that would lead to his hugely successful fashion brand FUBU. After selling $800 worth of hats he designed on the corner of Colosseum Mall in New York, John solidified his dream and began a fearless pursuit to achieve it.“I’m going to dress this community,” John said he told his mother upon returning from the mall.A sense of purpose, confidence and bold aspiration led John to become a premier hip-hop brand across the world, clothing artists such as LL Cool J, Will Smith and the Backstreet Boys. John described the five points of success that resulted him in becoming a presidential ambassador, three-time bestselling author, star of “Shark Tank” and a globally-renowned entrepreneur.John’s said his first point was “S,” which stands for to set goals. He said he reads his goals right before he goes to bed and the minute he wakes up so that he keeps them at the forefront of his mind, consciously and unconsciously.John said “H” stands for do your homework. He said that learning from those around you and not turning a blind eye to those who are younger than you can keep you aware of what is to come next. Doing the research on your audience and understand their needs is also key to accomplishing your goals.“A” for John stands for amor, which is Spanish for “to love.” John said everyone should truly love what they are doing.“I would dress people for free the rest of my life if I could,” he said.John also said to remember you are the brand, which is what “R” stands for. He refreshed the audience on social media reminders such as keeping a clean image in person and on the internet.John said “K” stands for keep on swimming. Sharks die when they stop swimming, John said.John left the audience with a personal story about his discovery of stage two cancer and a call to action to get their early detection tests. He also revealed a few behind-the-scenes secrets of “Shark Tank.” He said the pitches actually average an hour in length even though viewers only see about eight minutes, the deals take three to nine months to close and the sharks don’t invest in companies — they invest in people.Tags: Daymond John, Idea Weeklast_img read more

If Information Equals Power

first_imgdan lyons 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market If information equals power, then what did Google just do to North Korea by releasing map data of the country including satellite views of its gulags? Until this week North Korea was just a blank space. Now we see subway stops, hotels — and enormous gulags like the Bukchang Gulag in the photo above. Much of the info comes from “citizen cartographers” who volunteered their help.Evan Osnos in the New Yorker has a thoughtful article about what this means. “Maps are so closely associated with power that dictatorships regard information on geography as a state secret. When I was a student in China in the nineties, the schools where I studied included ‘detailed maps’ in the list of contraband, along with dissident memoirs and porn. Even recently, China has arrested foreign researchers who were seeking to acquire detailed data on the land, either for extractive industries or other purposes.”That said, Osnos points out that the North Korea map data “reminds us just how much we still can not see,” and how much we still don’t know about what goes on inside that country. And while the map data is interesting to us, it won’t have much impact inside North Korea since hardly anybody has Internet access.Schmidt’s VisitGoogle Chairman Eric Schmidt recently traveled to North Korea. A Google spokesman told the Washington Post that Schmidt’s visit and the release of map data were not related. Still, it’s hard to imagine Schmidt didn’t at least mention to his hosts that this was about to happen. I can imagine Schmidt pointing out to his hosts that in an age of crowd-sourcing and satellites, it’s really no longer possible to hide.I can’t help thinking that Google just did something significant here, and also that Sergey Brin, whose family escaped oppression in the Soviet Union and who is said to have strong feelings about the subject, maybe had something to do with it.At the very least Google has reminded us how incredibly strange it is that even now, in 2013, an entire country can remain so walled off from the rest of the world. Those gulags are the size of cities. Who are the people living in them? What are their lives like? This is the conversation that Google is provoking. This is not the first time technology has been wielded as a geopolitical tool (eg drones, Stuxnet) but this time it’s different, because this time the entity using technology to push for change is not a country but a company. This is Google claiming a new role for itself. This is a tech company becoming a political actor, taking an interest in things that go beyond its product line and its bottom line, flexing its nerd muscles and daring to challenge a tyrant. That’s significant. Image courtesy of Google Maps.
