AT&T: MMS is Coming to the iPhone on September 25

first_imgThe Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tags:#Apple#mobile#news#web Related Posts center_img AT&T just announced that MMS for the iPhone 3G and 3GS will become available on September 25th. While the iPhone itself already supports this feature, AT&T held back on making it available to its customers, much to the disappointment of many iPhone owners. MMS, which basically allows users to send images, audio, and short videos to other phones just like a text message, will be enabled through a software update for the iPhone. According to AT&T, the company didn’t enable this feature any earlier because it needed to upgraded its infrastructure to the point where it was ready to handle the traffic it expects to see once this feature becomes available. About TimeMMS, of course, has always been available on a wide variety of phones and when Apple announced that the iPhone 3.0 firmware upgrade would be capable of supporting MMS but that AT&T wasn’t quite ready yet, a lot of users were quite disappointed. Indeed, Apple and AT&T are currently being sued for misleading consumers into believing that the iPhone would be capable of multimedia messaging.Ever since the iPhone launched, AT&T has been criticized for not being able to handle the traffic the iPhone already generates on its mobile data network. Waiting for its network to be ready to handle this traffic was probably the right decision, especially given that the company expects to see “record volumes of MMS traffic” once it enable this feature on the iPhone.iPhone 3.1 Also Coming September 25?A bit earlier this month, our own Sarah Perez wondered if MMS would be enabled in the next version of the iPhone OS. If an OS update is indeed necessary to enable MMS on the iPhone, then we can be pretty sure that September 25 will also be the launch date for the iPhone 3.1 update. Press ReleaseHere is the full press release:An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility CustomersWe know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day. We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end. We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come. We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives. frederic lardinois Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaceslast_img read more

An NZE Project, a Tragic Fire, and a Will to Rebuild

first_imgOn August 29, 2007, Montreal-based architect Sevag Pogharian broke ground on Alstonvale Net Zero House, a project whose ambitious energy efficiency design earned it one of 12 berths in the 2007 edition of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative program.Pogharian, who founded the firm Sevag Pogharian Design in 1990 and eventually expanded its services to include not only residential design but construction, intended Alstonvale Net Zero House to embody extremely high standards of sustainability, energy efficiency, and comfort while still meeting a price target that would compare favorably to prices of other homes in Hudson, a prosperous community near Montreal. The house was designed to generate all the energy needed for its operation and for the household’s transportation needs, and it would feature home-scale agricultural components, including a greenhouse, to help feed the home’s occupants. RELATED ARTICLE Three Massachusetts Home Fires Linked to Spray-Foam InstallationBut on May 25, 2010, the nearly completed house burned almost to the ground. “I feel crushed,” Pogharian wrote that day in a blog entry on his firm’s website. His insurer is still investigating the incident, although Pogharian noted in a story recently published by the Hudson-St. Lazare Gazette that preliminary evidence points to combustion of polyurethane foam that had been applied in the attic earlier in the day.Thinking through the possibilitiesIt was indeed a warm afternoon, reaching about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, when workers sprayed the polyurethane foam in the attic. The crew also ran a fan in the space to help ventilate it, although the fan was removed when the workers left at about 2:30 p.m. But if the foam in fact caused the fire, Pogharian observed, it’s unlikely its combustion was due solely to warm air in the attic. Instead, the lack of air circulation may have increased the concentration of combustible gases in the space, which could have caused the foam layer to thicken more than anticipated and further trap heat.“I’ve come to learn a lot about polyurethane since the fire,” he told the paper. “It’s an exothermic reaction. You mix these chemicals, it gives off heat, and in the process it inflates. One of the things with polyurethane, if you apply it too thickly, the heat that is generated inside is not dissipated. It is an excellent insulation and it can combust.”Pogharian’s initial responses to the disaster – depletion and inertia – changed for the better as time passed. He says he now is more motivated than ever to see the project to completion, pending settlement with the insurance company, which has already covered demolition expenses.“I want to push this thing so it sees the light of day – the whole concept – the house, the car, the edible landscape, the net-zero greenhouse,” he told the Gazette. “I can walk away, or I can plunge in and try to get it done. If the insurance stuff gets worked out, there is no reason not to do it.”last_img read more

Resource Discovery: Understanding the Military Experience

first_imgJay Morse & Heidi Radunovich, PhDPBS (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) has some excellent resources for mental health professionals who want to better understand the military experience and inform their practice. On the web page entitled, “Stories of Service” multiple links are provided that give information about the challenges and opportunities that military members may experience when returning to a civilian environment.Crafting useful art objects can give military members an opportunity to express themselves and “tell their story.” In the PBS’s series “Craft in America” there is an episode entitled “Service” in which veterans tell their stories.“My wife calls my work War Awareness Art. I’m not so concerned if you’re for or against a specific war, but that you’re ignorant of what’s happening is not OK with me.” — artist Ehren Tool (PBS, Retrieved from http://www.pbs.org/veterans/stories-of-service/stream-tv/a-to-z/craft-in-america-service/)PBS Resources:Veterans telling their stories in craft making. Industry Minister Says He Will Be Working to Provide More Factory Space

first_img “One of the things that I identified in Expo 2018 is a tremendous demand for factory space for processing, and I’ve decided to appropriate more of the properties held by Government to support the expansion of this particular sector,” Mr. Shaw said. Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, says he will be working to provide more factory space and agro-processing centres for local manufacturers in Jamaica. Addressing the American Chamber of Commerce of Jamaica (AMCHAM) United States (US) Regional Trade Agenda Breakfast Meeting at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on June 22, Story Highlights Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, says he will be working to provide more factory space and agro-processing centres for local manufacturers in Jamaica.Addressing the American Chamber of Commerce of Jamaica (AMCHAM) United States (US) Regional Trade Agenda Breakfast Meeting at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on June 22,Mr. Shaw said his mission is to satisfy the needs of local manufacturers who have been asking for more space to produce.“One of the things that I identified in Expo 2018 is a tremendous demand for factory space for processing, and I’ve decided to appropriate more of the properties held by Government to support the expansion of this particular sector,” Mr. Shaw said. The Minister pointed out that there are nine acres of land at the old Agricultural Marketing Corporation (AMC) complex on Spanish Town Road that was used for the packaging of exports and processing for local distribution, and he wants to develop the site into a modern agro-processing centre.Mr. Shaw argued that the location would be ideal, as it is only a few hundred feet from the port of Kingston. The Minister told the meeting that in recent times, there has been an increase in demand for factory space by local manufacturers, which he is willing to satisfy, as this will increase the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the future.“Factory space is something everybody is crying out for, and in spite of the good work being done by the Factories Corporation of Jamaica, we’re short of space,” he said.Mr. Shaw said with new agro-processing centres in Jamaica, this will allow for more agricultural produce to be processed into new products and exported.“Processed food is clearly an area of potential [and] significant growth for Jamaica, and we must acknowledge the pioneering role of companies,” the Minister said.“We need to accelerate the processing of our local produce, because we’ve always been called a nation of samples and we need to graduate out of that and fast, because the global consumption patterns are changing and becoming highly sophisticated,” Mr. Shaw said.last_img read more
