Dirtbags battle Bears twice

first_imgLONG BEACH – No one would ever call a Pac-10 team a respite, but Cal comes to Long Beach State this weekend as an island in the team’s rigorous non-conference schedule. The Dirtbags have played 11 games thus far (6-4, with one game suspended) and all of them have been against a nationally ranked opponent, including preseason top five teams Texas and Rice. After facing Cal tonight (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) at Blair, their next ten games will also be against ranked teams – at Arizona State, a rematch with UCLA, a trip to Wichita State and the annual non-conference series with Fullerton. Cal is 5-5 on the season and opened it with a series win against UC Irvine. They’ve won five of the last six meetings against the Dirtbags, including a sweep during a rainy weekend at Blair in 2005. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Right fielder Jason Corder, who has three home runs on the young season, and catcher Travis Howell transferred to Long Beach after two seasons at Cal. The Dirtbags will throw Vance Worley (0-0, 3.86) against Cal lefthander Craig Bennigan (1-1, 0.71) tonight and Omar Arif (1-1, 2.0) versus Tyson Ross (1-1, 1.77) Saturday. Arif is coming off a hard-luck three-hit loss against Rice last weekend. The series is only a two-gamer because Cal overbooked its schedule and had to trim a game. last_img read more
