Dark Phoenix Trailer Released More Marvel Movie News

first_imgThe X-Men aren’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, and it’ll be a while before we see any Mutants team up with (whatever’s left of) The Avengers onscreen. Until then, the rebooted X-Men series is continuing on as a separate entity. After X-Men: Days of Future Past retconned all the terrible decisions made by X-Men: The Last Stand, the slate was clean. They could adapt any story from the comics they wanted. We got X-Men: Apocalypse. They can’t all be winners. Also exciting though, they could redo classic stories the original run of movies got way wrong. That’s where Dark Phoenix comes in.The movie’s been through a delay and two weeks of reshoots, but we now have the first trailer. Definitive proof that X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a movie that’s coming out. And you know? It doesn’t look that bad. The current cast of the X-Men movies is great, and it’ll be fun to see an almost entirely new creative team take on this story. One major point in its favor: It looks nothing like X-Men: The Last Stand. It definitely looks like another one of these, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With the exception of Apocalypse, the X-Men movies since First Class have been enjoyable at least. The action looks good, and a more in-depth look into Jean Grey’s past could be interesting. There’s just not all that much new or exciting going on here. It’s another X-Men movie. It could be a very good one, but we won’t know for sure until it comes out. That might partially be because Phoenix isn’t a particularly flashy or strange-looking villain. She’s essentially a much more powerful, much more violent Jean Grey. That could actually work in the movie’s favor. No chance of a rubbery Apocalypse rearing its fake-looking head. Also, Sophie Turner is a great actor, and, as we’ve seen in Game of Thrones, she can play the duality in a role like Jean Grey/Phoenix very well.X-Men: Dark Phoenix will arrive in theaters February 14, 2019.Photo via MarvelBefore we see Dark Phoenix though, there’s another non-MCU Marvel movie on the way. Venom comes out soon, which means it’s time for the actors to make the rounds and try to get as many fans into seats as possible. By now, we’ve seen almost all of the footage Sony Pictures is going to show us of the movie, so actor Tom Hardy is letting some interesting details about the making of the film loose. Specifically, how he chose to play the character. In an interview with RTE Entertainment, Hardy revealed he based his portrayal of Eddie Brock on UFC fighter Conor McGregor. Yeah. That certainly adds some context to what we’ve seen in the trailers. I mean, I’ve never personally heard McGregor talk about turds in the wind… but you can picture it, right?“There was an aspect the studio wanted somebody who could fight, which they always do in these sort of hero movies. They want somebody who can have a scrap. Conor obviously wants to have a scrap with everybody, so that’s useful,” he said. Well, he’s not wrong about that. And hey, Venom is also an unrepentant heel who’s only kept around because of the sheer amount of money he makes the company. But hey, an actor draws from all sorts of places when playing a role. Hardy says we’re not going to recognize anything specifically borrowed from the fighter. “It was more of an interior choice if that makes sense,” Hardy said. We’ll see many more of Hardy’s internal and external choices when Venom comes to theaters October 5.Sean Gunn (Photo via Marvel)Over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, drama and speculations are still rising from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s firing last summer. With the movie put on indefinite hold while Disney tries to line up a new director, questions about how much of Gunn’s vision will remain intact continue to be raised. Early reports said that while Gunn was out as director, Disney still wanted to use his script for the movie. An interview with the director’s brother, actor Sean Gunn who plays Ravager Kraglin in the Guardians movies, appears to confirm that is the case.Speaking to Tulsa World, Sean Gunn said that while he knows all the secrets we’re desperately trying to find out about Avengers 4, he still has no idea what the plans are for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. “I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air,” he said.So despite the indefinite hold, Disney and Marvel still want the movie to happen, and they want to use the already-finished script James Gunn wrote. That’s a little reassuring at least. Guardians of the Galaxy would feel even weirder if anyone else was behind the dialog. Sean Gunn acknowledges that it’s tricky to find another director who’s able to step into a job like this, and then get all the actors together, who are now working on other projects. You know, it would seem to me you could solve a lot of problems here by rehiring the guy you let a bunch of Twitter trolls bully you into firing, Disney. Just saying. But that’s probably not going to happen. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the other hand, likely is. There’s at least a desire to see the trilogy through. “I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, ‘Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We’re just not sure when yet,’” Sean Gunn said.Oh, and about those Avengers 4 secrets? He’s not telling. All he will say is, after reading the script and shooting Avengers 4, he likes it more than Avengers Infinity War. Well, that’s exciting to hear. After Infinity War floored us last April, it’s direct sequel has some Thanos-sized shoes to fill. We’ve got a list of every comic book TV show that’s in production, including all the Marvel Netflix shows.
