On April 20, the apex court has said: “Having considered the matter, we refrain from passing any judicial order at this moment, leaving it to the wisdom of the media to show restraint, act responsibly as is expected from them and accordingly decide what should or should not be published, as wild and scandalous allegations undermine and irreparably damage reputation and negate independence of judiciary.” Also Read – Trio win Nobel Medicine Prize for work on cells, oxygen Gogoi has rubbished the allegation of sexual harassment against him, saying that there was a “larger conspiracy” to destabilize the independence of the judiciary which, he said, was “under very serious threat”. The Delhi High court was hearing a petition filed by an Anti Corruption Council of India organisation through counsel Hussain Mueen Farooq and B. Sudha. The petition has sought a direction to restrain TV channels, newspapers as well as social media platforms from publishing or telecasting the allegations of sexual harassment against the CJI till the three-judge panel arrives at any conclusion. The petitioner said that he suspected the involvement of “anti-national elements” in the matter.last_img read more

Embedding sustainability for enduring project value

first_imgSusanne Cooper and Nick Fleming* of SKM note that “sustainability is not just a political buzz word used to satisfy the concerns of stakeholders or environmentalists; it is critical to the success and longevity of projects. Sustainability principles are now broadly accepted by project teams as a useful compass to guide planning and design decisions. However, in managing sustainability in large, complex projects, there is a need to go beyond concepts or principles and to apply them pragmatically.“It is essential to apply a structured, systematic process, particularly for programs that involve multiple projects and project teams. Likewise, it is critical to encourage thinking within a sustainability framework and engender this as part of design development.“By rigorously applying sustainability principles to all decisions, it improves the long-term viability of those decisions and reduces the ecological footprint of infrastructure construction and operation, both financially and socially. These principles should not only form the basis for decisions, but can also be used to assess multiple options against detailed sustainability guidelines. In this way, sustainability is integrated into every activity undertaken by the organisation or project team.“When embedded into all facets of a program, sustainability can:be applied throughout design and constructionbecome part of the company culture ; andbe adopted as the strategic direction for all projects.“The real challenge is in the ‘how’ – and in applying sustainability principles across multiple projects at various stages of design. Importantly, embedding sustainability from the beginning of projects is essential in creating enduring value.“Project delivery, engineering and sciences firm Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) has been conducting sustainability workshops with clients to show how including sustainability from the beginning of projects is vital to creating enduring value.“One such workshop has been conducted for the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Cape Lambert Project in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Intended to become a fundamental input to a project, rather than an ‘optional extra’, the workshops involve a cross-section of team members and encourage participants to think about projects in a holistic, integrated way, using sustainability principles.“Addressing environmental, social, community, infrastructure and economic issues, the workshops have shown that incorporating sustainability design can positively impact the project’s design life. The workshops encourage participants to question conventional thinking and allow them to move away from the detail or out of their comfort zone, often with significant outcomes.“Rather than design a program for them, the workshops aim to facilitate a process for participants to come up with ideas and new approaches to sustainable design to apply to the project. Part of the workshop aims to help implement corporate sustainability policies at the project level. Many organisations have corporate policies, objectives and statements of commitment, but implementing them into all activities can be a challenge – particularly if project managers have little experience in working with sustainability frameworks. By showing a commitment by action and delivering on those statements, community trust is gained. This, in turn, helps the approvals process, which is often subject to lengthy delays. By engaging stakeholders in these critical issues – early – projects have a much greater chance of success.“There is a degree of corporate reputation and a social licence to operate management that are important outcomes from adopting a sustainability approach to project design and delivery.“Embedding sustainability into an organisation or project team’s culture requires building awareness of applying sustainability in all activities and confidence in using a toolbox of sustainability approaches. To address this, SKM has developed a sustainability toolbox that provides a structured, systematic process and practical tools for project teams to apply. This has been applied at each level to include strategic questions and assessments that are most relevant to the scoping and conceptual design stage, as well as tools more appropriate for detailed design and construction.“An important part of the toolbox approach has been to develop the team’s capability to apply these tools, sustainability criteria and way of thinking that epitomises a sustainable approach. To build this capability, SKM has designed and delivered a series of interactive sustainability learning modules appropriate for all team members. The modules introduce the concept of sustainability and cover specific tools (life cycle analysis, ecological footprint), and their potential applications.“Long-held assumptions and current practice often strongly influence decisions across all elements of a project – from waste management to energy and costing. Financial estimates and assumptions underpin many decisions, but are rarely scrutinised. This is particularly relevant, given the rapidly changing costs linked to energy greenhouse gas emissions and water, and the longevity of substantial infrastructure which requires robust financial assessments over the life of the asset.“Typically, large projects are commissioned with urgent time frames; the various disciplines brought together quickly for the project become busy and focused. Within this project environment, having a specific role designated to sustainability is important – not to develop specific design solutions isolated from other team members, but to establish an integrated and holistic process and framework that allows all team members to identify opportunities to build sustainability thinking into key decisions.“This is a role that straddles all project tasks, including engineering design, communications, community engagement, on-ground works, site location and planning and operations. The role of a sustainability manager for these kinds of projects is increasingly important for a sustainability strategy to be effectively designed and implemented.*Based in Brisbane, Australia, Susanne Cooper is SKM’s Executive Environmental Planner and review panel member of Sustainability Strategy and Evaluation, Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation and Integrated Natural Resource Management. Dr Nick Fleming is based in Melbourne and has over 15 years’ experience in consulting and research. With a PhD in Sustainable Urban Water Cycle Management, Nicholas is the Technology Manager for SKM’s Water & Environment Business Unit, the Practice Leader for Sustainability, and a Strategy and Sustainability board member.last_img read more

Sustainable development agreement between ICMM and Chinas CCCMC

first_imgThe International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) and the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemical Importers and Exporters (CCCMC) announced today that they have entered into a formal agreement to help promote sustainable development in Chinese companies’ overseas mining investments. The new agreement makes ICMM and CCCMC’s wealth of expertise available to Chinese mining enterprises that are looking to further improve their environmental and social performance practices, as they step up their presence worldwide. In recent decades, overseas investments by Chinese companies have increased significantly.Chinese overseas mining investments are a relatively new phenomenon and Chinese mining companies are often newcomers in the economies of resource-rich countries. They are, however, increasingly becoming the most significant investor in many countries and this is likely to continue.Dr Nicky Black, Director of Environment and Social Progress at ICMM said: “We are looking forward to working with CCCMC. This new agreement will enable us to both learn from each other and further improve the environmental and social performance of the mining sector.“Supplying the growing demand for metals and minerals sustainably is a challenge facing us all and I believe that our new agreement with CCCMC will be a very productive partnership.”Mr. Sun Lihui, Director, Development Department CCCMC said: “CCCMC is interested in working with ICMM, to complement each other’s strengths and to learn from each other. This will help continually improve the risk management and governance of mining companies, enhancing business opportunities while reducing risks.”ICMM and CCCMC are important industry organisations in the international arena, our strategic cooperation will advance sustainable development in the mining industry” he added. The MoU will also help Chinese enterprises address the new challenges that the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development place on industry, governments and civil society alike through its ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Globally, the extractives sector is under intense scrutiny. Stakeholders (especially governments, communities, investors, insurers and civil society) have expressed concerns about the sector in terms of its environmental and social performance and the sector’s contribution to poverty reduction and sustainable development. This Memorandum of Understanding will help Chinese overseas mining operations to meet society’s environmental and social performance expectations, and to successfully adhere to increasingly stricter environmental and social performance standards.last_img read more

Le 20 décembre 2010 à 15:47 • Emmanuel Perrinlast_img read more

Court rules on tax appeal authority in pipeline dispute

first_imgTrans-Alaska Pipeline System. (Photo by Alaska Department of Natural Resources)A rule that allowed governments and trans-Alaska Pipeline System owners to appeal taxes and avoid a public process has been invalidated by the Supreme Court. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the Friday ruling says the volunteer State Assessment Review Board is the sole entity with authority to decide taxable parts of the oil and gas infrastructure.Attorney Robin Brena argued on behalf of the city of Valdez, which has not signed onto an $8 billion valuation for the system that the Fairbanks North Star Borough and North Slope Borough agreed to.Brena said appeals on taxability could take years to decide, creating uncertainty for municipalities. He said Valdez gets about 90 percent of its revenue from trans-Alaska Pipeline System property taxes. The ruling won’t directly impact ongoing valuation lawsuits.last_img read more

(Photo by Skip Gray/360 North)Senate Bill 89, which would require parents to opt their kids into sex ed lessons, was introduced by Sen. Mike Dunleavy and narrowly passed House Education last month. On Tuesday afternoon the Health and Social Services Committee, chaired byRep. Paul Seaton, heard over two hours of heated public testimony on bothsides before putting the measure to a vote.Vice-Chair Rep. Liz Vazquez, an Anchorage Republican, told the committeeshe supports the bill because she believes Planned Parenthood curriculumcontains graphic material that many families would find offensive.“I’ll be blunt: I’m a bit shocked by what I have found,” Vazquez said. “I find that the materials are culturally insensitive. By that I mean it is insulting, it is degrading to traditional cultures. They are traditional Muslim cultures, traditionaly Hispanic, southeast Asian, and African cultures. This is very insulting.”Rep. Geran Tarr opposed the bill, citing the need for comprehensive sexualeducation in a state with high rates of domestic violence and sexualassault.Tarr also noted that parents currently have the right to take their kidsout of lessons if they wish. The bill failed in the committee 2-5, with Vice-Chair Vasquez and Rep.Talerico voting for it.Two similar bills – S.B. 191 and H.B. 352 – are still moving through theLegislature.last_img read more

Sesame Street Has Been Making Movie Parodies For Years

first_img In the Star Wars parody trailer, released via Sesame Street, the pun names are out of control. Luke Piewalker, Flan Solo, and Chewie the Cookie must work together to rescue Princess Parfaya from Darth Baker. Along the way, they must help Flan learn how to control his appetite for cookies, or else he’ll eat his partner.I had no idea this existed, yet the video came out in 2014. In fact, Sesame Street has a number of other movie trailer parodies, utilizing loose story elements, characters, and plot lines from famous films and TV shows, many which its target audience probably never saw.Sesame Street has been around for decades and comes from the same tradition as The Muppets, so the show making movie and TV trailer parodies isn’t surprising. However, the five-minute-long videos have been getting uploaded to the show’s official YouTube channel for years and seem to have slipped under the radar. It’s a shame because the bulk of them are clever, distorting some famous pop culture references in a way that is uniquely Sesame Street.Sesame Street has been making these videos since 2013 at least and uploading them to YouTube. They’re kid-friendly–often going over basic mathematics, colors, and words–but sometimes feature very adult source material. They’ve touched upon everything from Harry Potter to Star Wars, which its core audience of preschoolers probably understands, but also Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards, and True Blood. It’s the ones in the latter category that tend to be the most memorable. Sons of Anarchy becomes “Sons of Poetry,” teaching kids how to rhyme “blue” and “you.” Even more astounding is how it manages to also feature the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, which is a reference that makes no sense in this context but is so weird to spot in a show for preschoolers that it’s worth mentioning. Many of the videos feature Cookie Monster as he learns about self-control and delayed gratification, but some of its strongest works show off the work of the puppetry team with new characters and props. “Game of Chairs,” a musical chair parody of Game of Thrones, has puppet versions of Cersei, Joffrey, Ned and Robb Stark, and Daenerys, and an Iron Throne that’s made out of iron golf clubs.“Game of Chairs” is also noteworthy for all the dark references to the source material, much of which will go over the heads of toddlers and people who’ve been avoiding the show for six seasons. Robb Stark has a wedding to attend, for example. Grover needs to hurry this game of musical chairs along. It’s not that the videos are unpopular. The “Game of Chairs” skit has gotten over three million views since it was uploaded in April 2015. However, that seems to be one of the most popular ones. Most have between one and two million views after multiple years on YouTube, which is a shame considering this is Sesame Street: a cultural institution for multiple generations of kids whose parents want them to sit still for a while. IMore seriously, Sesame Street is made by a non-profit institution and has been running for over 45 seasons. It was made originally to help inner-city kids learn and just happened to appeal to a much wider audience. The low views on some of these parody videos seem related to its dwindling viewership, as the move to streaming and away from cable caused the show’s numbers and finances to drop. This resulted in a deal with HBO that has the seasons airing first on the network’s streaming service. We’re glad that we still get to have Sesame Street around for a few more years, but in the meantime, we’ll continue watching its work. The parodies specifically are great fun, even if the kids won’t always understand the references. It just means they have cross-generational appeal. Webjet to progressively roll out epricing

first_imgSource = e-Travel Blackboard: C.F Webjet will progressively introduce e-pricing covering international flights as of next week.Webjet’s Managing Director David Clarke commented on the e-pricing launch, which will continue to be rolled out progressively next month. “E-pricing has been developed international by Travelport Galileo over the last year or so and has now in conjunction with Galileo been tailored for online application for Webjet’s Australian online market.”The new e-pricing system will allow Webjet’s Australian customers to have deeper access and wider choice on international fares. This will allow customers to take advantage of some cheaper fare structures which may require a route with an additional stopover.Effectively, this could mean a trade off between price and itinerary duration but e-pricing could provide substantial savings in the leisure market. The company provided an example of these potential savings in a statement on the ASX, “A simple example would be Brisbane to Los Angeles via Auckland where savings may be in the order of $140 or more on a fare of approximately $1400.”“Naturally all of the duration optimized itinerary will continue to be available unchanged so the effect will be a wider choice, and is some cases, additional substantial savings.” last_img read more

Mortgage Rates Climb Higher

first_img Share Mortgage Rates Climb Higher April 18, 2019 690 Views Fixed rate mortgages rose for the third-consecutive week, according to Wednesday’s Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS).“After dropping dramatically in late March, mortgage rates have modestly increased since then. While this week marks the third-consecutive week of rises, purchase activity reached a nine-year high—indicative of a strong spring homebuying season,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgages (FRM) declined to 4.06% in March, compared to 4.28 percent last week. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage last month averaged 3.5%, which was down from the previously reported figure of 3.71%.The 30-year FRM rose to 4.17% with an average 0.5 point for the week ending April 18—a small increase from the prior week’s 4.1%. The 30-year FRM averaged 4.47 percent this time last year. The 15-year FRM increased from 3.60% to 3.62% with an average 0.5 point. Both figures are lower than the 3.94% reported a year ago at this time.Five-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) continues to surpass last year’s rate of 3.6%. The PMMS reported the ARM averaged 3.78% with an average 0.3 point this week, which is a small decrease from 3.80% the week prior.Khater said last month that he expects “mortgage rates to remain low, in line with the low 10-year treasury yields, boosting homebuyer demand in the next few months.”Fluctuating mortgage rates aren’t scaring away homebuyers, as mortgage applications to purchase a home rose 1% last week from the previous week and were 7% higher than a year ago, according to CNBC.
