Andrew Gillum could be Florida’s first Black governor

first_imgAndrew Gillum…could be Florida’s first African American Governor BY Garth A. Rose“Lordie, Lordie, I think this young man is another Barack Obama in the making,” Miranda Locksley, a resident of the City of Tallahassee, commented as she referred to that city’s Mayor Andrew Gillum who could be Florida’s next, and first African-American, governor. Some tout him as Florida’s next, and first African-American, governor. He officially launched his bid Wednesday.Gillum, 37, debuted in Florida politics when at age-23 he was elected to the Tallahassee city commission. In 2014, at age 34, he was elected mayor. Now, Gillum, plans to justify his description as a “rising star” in Florida’s Democratic Party by seeking to create history as Florida’s first African-American Governor to succeed incumbent Governor Rick Scott who terms out as governor next year.Gillum was born in Richmond Heights in South Miami Dade in 1979.  After attending the Frank C. Martin Elementary School, his family relocated to Gainesville. He    later attended Florida A &M University (FAMU). There, he made history as the first student member of FAMU’s Board of Trustees. In 2003, he was recognized by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation as the “Emerging Leader for 2003.” He justified the award when that year he was elected to Tallahassee’s city commission even before  graduating from FAMU.Although the Democratic primaries for Florida Governor isn’t until August 2018, Gillum is highly touted to prevail. Following Miami politician Daryl Jones in 2002, Gillum is only the second African-American to run for governor in Florida. One of the first South Florida officials to endorse Gillum’s bid for governor is Broward Commissioner Dale Holness who first met Gillum in 2004.“From that time, I recognized in Andrew Gillum an unusually gifted politician who genuinely represents the interest of Floridians. I  recognized his integrity, energy, positive thinking and dedication to astute political leadership, and commitment to job creation, providing affordable healthcare, and improving the local economy. As mayor, he showed remarkable initiative in stimulating Tallahassee’s economy by refunding utility deposits to residents thus enhancing their purchasing power. I genuinely believe Andrew Gillum is qualified to be Florida’s next governor.”Within days of declaring his bid for governor, Gillum raised $1 million towards his campaign. In 2008 and 2012 Democrats candidates Alex Sink and Charlie Crist respectively, lost agonizingly close elections to Scott.  Several Democrats in Central and South Florida believe Gillum has the potential to excite a huge Democratic voter turnout next year, giving the party a real chance of electing the first Democratic governor since Governor Lawton Chiles’ election in 1991. and reelection in 1994.last_img read more

Formula One Set For Exciting Grand Finale In Abu Dhabi

first_imgAfter an exciting and gruesome season of intense racing and competition, the curtains would be closed on the 2017 Formula One season this weekend in Abu Dhabi, a province in the United Arab Emirates. The world championships may have already been wrapped up, but Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will be hungry for victory to take the final bragging rights of the season and the morale booster heading into the winter break.Valtteri Bottas edged out Lewis Hamilton for pole position at the Abu Dhabi GP as Mercedes sealed a dominant one-two in the final qualifying session of 2017.World champion Hamilton held an advantage over Bottas for much of the hour but a sensational Q3 lap from the Finn, a track record 1:36.231, saw him beat his team-mate by a tenth of a second to claim his fourth pole of the season. It was the first time Bottas has ever sealed back-to-back poles in F1, and he added: “I was so gutted in Brazil getting pole and missing the win. I have a clear target for tomorrow.”Sebastian Vettel, so often Hamilton’s main rival in an enthralling campaign, was closest to troubling Mercedes for Ferrari but still more than half a second adrift in third.Daniel Ricciardo produced his best lap of the weekend to beat Kimi Raikkonen to fourth and will join Vettel on the second row for Sunday’s race. Encouragingly for the Australian, he out-qualified Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen by 0.3 seconds.Massa arguably drove the lap of the day for Williams to knock McLaren’s Fernando Alonso out in Q2.The Brazilian, taking part in his final F1 qualifying session, will certainly have enjoyed getting the better over his former Ferrari team-mate as McLaren’s last Saturday with a Honda engine ended with neither driver in Q3.“I want to have fun tomorrow. I have nothing to lose, risk everything you can. Let’s have fun,” he addedMassa has never finished outside of the points in Abu Dhabi and his qualifying performance maintained his record of always starting in the top 10 at the circuit.“It’s a good way to retire. You finish with good lap times, good races, taking the best out. I’m happy that I’m finished with my head up and competitive.”Who will come out on top in the F1 2017 season finale and take the bragging rights into the winter? Gaming brand to take Manchester United sleeve sponsorship?

first_img StumbleUpon Submit Premier League looks to broadcast every behind-closed-door fixture August 28, 2020 CT Gaming bolsters Italian profile with The Betting Coach  August 27, 2020 Related Articles Manchester United, the world’s richest football club, could be about to sign a deal which would see a gambling brand appear on its famous red shirts for the first time. Unlike the rest of the Premier League, Manchester United has been very selective in the number of partners it has from the gambling industry, limiting itself to a single commercial deal at any one time and only then restricting visibility to digital channels and perimeter board advertising. But it seems the introduction of the sleeve sponsorship concept in the Premier League has made the club re-evaluate the policy.Manchester United has come close to having a gambling brand on its shirt before; in 2006 it had all but agreed on a £75m deal with online casino brand Mansion, but seemingly got cold feet on the association with gambling and the deal fell through. Mansion went on to sponsor Tottenham Hotspur for four years and have partnered with several other Premier League sides since. This time the gambling operator in the running appears to be the Asian-facing operator ManBetX, which is already a Premier League shirt sponsor with Crystal Palace.ManBetX has recently worked with Asia-based agency the Football Factory, which was an instrumental part of the deal that saw the brand announced as the International Presenting Partner Asia for Italy’s Lega Serie A at the start of the season. The Football Factory has also got links with Manchester United. Just last year the firm brought Manchester United Legends to play in Australia for the benefit of both the Manchester United Foundation and the DT38 charity.A spokesperson for Manchester United said that the club were in a number of discussions with potential partners and highlighted that there had been a lot of interest in the sleeve sponsorship opportunities across the Premier League.A complication for any such deal to occur would be that Manchester United currently has an exclusive partnership deal with gambling operator Marathonbet which does not expire until the end of season. This would mean that any deal would not be activated until next the season started. Jaap Kalma, former AC Milan Chief Commercial Officer and ambassador for Betting on Football Conference at Stamford Bridge on 20-22 March, commented: “The sleeve sponsorship appears to be a very interesting option for both gambling companies and football clubs since it became a possibility in the Premier League because it opens up a whole new range of strong visibility options for a relatively lower level of investment.“The opportunities around sleeve sponsorship is one of the many things we are discussing at the SBC Sponsorship Forum, part of the Betting on Football Conference, as well as issues around social responsibility and public perception.”Before the season started, Manchester United were strongly linked with a sleeve sponsorship deal with dating application Tinder, but the two organisations were unable to make a match. Match-fixing suspicions raised in Wimbledon first round

first_img TIU denies two requests to lift provisional suspensions July 27, 2020 Related Articles Possible signs of match-fixing have been flagged in the first round of a men’s doubles match at this year’s Wimbledon, report various US media outlets. It is detailed that online global bookmaker Pinnacle Sports has subsequently confirmed that the match was “flagged as suspicious due to irregular betting patterns,” after “a series of bets from accounts with a history of wagering on suspicious matches” were placed in the immediate build up.The New York Times has named the match in question as that involving Spanish paid David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco, who fell to a 7-6 6-4 6-7 6-1 defeat against João Sousa and Leonardo Mayer, of Portugal and Argentina respectively, last week.Speaking to ABC, Pinnacle’s Sports Integrity Manager Sam Gomersall stated that “we would anticipate some minor odds movement in any tennis match”.Before adding: “We followed our strict protocol when it comes [to] match-fixing alerts by notifying the authorities on site at Wimbledon and reducing our market offering immediately.” It is reported that Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) has referred the matter onto the Tennis Integrity Unit, who said in a statement “The TIU has become more transparent, hence our publication of [quarterly] match alert data, but that is also balanced against the need for operational confidentiality, as in this matter”.This follows news in May that Argentine Nicolás Kicker had been found guilty of match-fixing offences, as announced by the TIU, making him the highest ranking player at that time to be convicted.Made hours before the draw for the French Open, Kicker was subsequently removed and a month later was handed a $25,000 fine and six-year ban, three of which are suspended on a probationary basis.
